4K Review: 2017 Toyota Highlander Quick Drive | Consumer Reports

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is family-friendly with plenty of cargo space and room for eight people. Forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking are standard on every trim level of the Highlander. But the infotainment system lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A car almost impossible to fault. Great value, space, features, safety & reliability in one uncompromise package. The Hybrid version adds a dose of great fuel efficiency + extra power to boot.

I found out the hard way.. if you need the 3rd row on a regular basis, get a minivan instead.

The Highlander is very good, very practical, very reliable and absolutely very boring!

My uncle is looking for a 3-row SUV I told him he should check the Toyota Highlander he says that Toyotas are boring he said he might look at the Volkswagen Atlas ,Dodge Durango or Ford Explorer

41k for a Toyota?

Wing Tsui, LOL where have you been? Stuck in the '80's? Car's have gotten expensive if you haven't noticed. A Toyota Land Cruiser starts over $80K US. $41K is nothing. You can pay Almost $70K for a new KIA (V8 K900).

The center console plastics are not good at all. Together with the outdated infotainment system, that makes the inside not desirable. The exterior look is actually good if you get the right color.

Not to mention it has 8 inches of ground clearance which basically trumps almost all Mid size SUV's in its class.

Good SUV for those wanting a reliable and predictable family SUV. Top trim levels get a 360 degree camera which is nice. Road noise is well subdued. Driving dynamics leave a lot to be desired and the 8 speed transmission isn't as smooth as it could be. At least it's a lot smoother than the 8 speed in the Sienna, which is horrendous.

2:05 Right here, look how much space that ridiculously wide center console takes away from the driver's right knee. Please have a taller driver try out the ergonomics, and not just by lowering the seat all the way down, but by lifting it up, like most people do to have good view of the surroundings. Check if the right hand hits your thigh during right turn, because that is Camry curse, and I suspect it will happen here, too. That means you cannot complete the turn safely, but you have to shift your hand to a different position. Stop just getting fixated on gadgets.

We own a Highlander Limited and simply adore it. It inspires confidence behind the wheel, and it's snow performance makes you feel very safe. Extremely reliable and using our droid phones, we have no issues with Bluetooth connectivity. Recommended Highly.

Ugly cheap looking interior

At that price you can get all that and more in a fully optioned Sorento EX. At some point Toyota needs to either step up their styling or their options to better match their pricing. Honda's new CRV is already making the RAV4 look way overpriced.

Well there's the Lexus NX, and since it has been outselling the BMW X3 for quite some time, Toyota is willing to sacrifice some RAV4 sales to boost their Lexus NX sales.
95thRiflesOCI

Actually the Rav4 is more competitively priced then the CRV. It comes with all these safety features while the CRV requires you to setup to the upper models. The only thing the CRV has over the Rav4 is the ground clearance and leg room, but then again it was redesigned this year and the Rav4 just got a face lift so comparisons can't really be made. ATM the korean brands are upping up their price and the only way you can get a better dealer is to get manufacturer incentives to get a better deal.

Most "educated" buyers know that Kia as well as Toyota are in the top 5 for reliability, so neither should have any real problems. Now as for resale...you are probably correct but after all those years one person will have been driving around with a fully loaded vehicle while the other is still slapping their GPS in the windshield and wishing for heated seats every winter.
Will Pikula

Myself and most educated buyers much rather spend a little extra to get a vehicle with incredible reliability. The resale value on a Kia is horrendous, so although its cheaper to begin with, you will see alot more money with the highlander and most toyotas when you trade it in.

Koreans will always have more options for the money but that comes at a price. Korean cars never have the reliability and re sale value of Japanese cars. So at the end of the day it's a choice for carmakers , and for the consumer. And even if it has less options , the HL interior is a better made interior than a sorento or Santa Fe

can you address the 8 speed automatic transmission issue on the highlander? you have mentioned that even after the software updates the transmission still shifts roughly and not as smooth as the previous 6 speed automatic. thanks

Mr.Logic23 probably best to wait a year or two before getting one with the 8 speed.
